Pride and Prejudice

Bennet Sisters

Women in the 19th century were portrayed with so much obsession to marriage. They have a thinking that growing old without a husband will be the worst thing that could happen to them. There will be no one who’s going to earn and to support them in their everyday living. It is also important that they will get married to a man who is rich and has a high income to support their future children.  In one scene, Mr. Collins proposed to Elizabeth who refused his offer.

Mrs. Bennet, Elizabeth’s mother, was so furious with what happen and forced Elizabeth to take back what she said. This scene tells us that woman during this time, don’t have the freedom to choose who to marry. Some were forced by their parents or with the financial situation they are in. During that time, women were also deprived to inherit which is totally unfair. This was the problem of the Bennet family because they were all ladies.

Women were like that on the 19th century but Elizabeth Bennet was totally different. She is into studying and not really obliging herself to be passionate to music. She speaks what she really feels and strongly fight for what she think is right. She may be out of tradition yet free and happy.

It is a pressure on men to have a stable work with high income during the 19th century. Low income deprives them to get married to a beautiful wife. Lucky are they if they belong to a rich family and inherit all their wealth. Their social status is also a basis on how people especially women treat them. Compared to women, men can do whatever they please.
